Olympia seeks input on names for parks; public hearing is set for this Thursday

Posted

Before making recommendations to the Olympia City Council, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) will conduct public hearings on Thursday, Oct. 17, regarding the proposed official naming of the Olympia Armory, Yelm Highway Community Park, and Kaiser Woods Park.

The city recently concluded its public renaming process for three facilities. In September, the city received 47 suggestions for renaming Olympia's public spaces through the Engage Olympia platform.

The Olympia Armory, a 50,000 sq. ft. facility acquired by the city in March 2022, is slated to become a community art center, supporting local artistic and entrepreneurial endeavors.

The 86-acre Yelm Highway Community Park will feature Olympia's first dedicated soccer fields, pickleball courts, a playground, and a dog park.

Kaiser Woods Park is a 70-acre park property located in Southwest Olympia. It is slated to be Olympia's first park with dedicated mountain biking trails. The park development will include over 5 miles of hiking and biking trails with skills areas and features for beginners to advanced riders.

Anyone interested in sharing their input is invited to attend the PRAC in-person meeting and present testimony at the public hearing on Thursday, Oct.17, 2024, at 6 p.m. at the Olympia Armory at 515 Eastside St SE, Olympia.
