Help name Thurston County parks and facilities: Criteria and community engagement

Posted

Olympia is seeking public input to officially name three park properties – the Olympia Armory, Yelm Highway Community, and Kaiser Woods Park.

The city will be collecting name suggestions through Sept. 27, 2024.

Through Engage Olympia, participants can submit their name ideas and the reason for recommending them for one or more parks or facilities. The public can also review the suggested names and upvote or "heart" the ones they like.

The city encouraged the people to "like" other names they think are good. The input will help the city determine the community's preferred names.

The Parks, Arts, and Recreation Commission (PARC) will host a public hearing on October 17, 2024, at 6 p.m. at the Olympia Armory (515 Eastside St SE, Olympia) to review and gather public comment on name submissions. PARC will then make recommendations for the Olympia Parks, Arts and Recreation Department to present to the City Council, which will make the final selections of the names.

When suggesting a name, the following criteria will be considered:

  • Neighborhood, boundary roads, or common usage identification
  • A natural or geographic feature
  • Significant historical events or cultural attributes
  • A historical figure
  • A name chosen by an individual (living or deceased) who has made a significant land and/or monetary contribution to the park system
  • An individual who has contributed outstanding civic service to the city of has been instrumental in acquiring or developing parks properties and who has been deceased for a period of at least one year
  • Organizations having contributed to and influenced the betterment of the city

To learn more, go to the Engage Olympia website.

What's wrong with the names they already have?

I suggest "The Armory" for the Armory. I can't imagine why this is such a problem. They won't even have to change the letters on the front of the building.

I tried to submit a name. The website (and by extension, PARC wants me to create an account) I have to create an account and then SIGN IN to make a suggestion? You can't even "like" (gads I HATE that mangling of grammar) it without having to sign in.

    This is utterly stupid.

If past experience with Parks and Recreation is any indication, none of our suggestions will be chosen. They've already decided, this is just eyewash, ''allowing'' us to ''help choose''.
