Olympia proclaims October 2024 Hindu Heritage Month  

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Olympia City Council proclaimed October 2024 as Hindu Heritage Month, recognizing the contributions of the Hindu-American community to the city's diversity and culture.  

The first-ever Hindu Heritage Month proclamation highlighted the Hindu community's vibrant culture and contributions.  

"Our community has benefitted from the many innovations of Hindu Americans, including Ayurvedic medicine, classical art, dance, music, meditation, yoga, literature, and community services," stated the proclamation.  

But despite their positive contributions to the city and the state, they "face stereotypes and misconceptions about their heritage and have been the targets of bullying, discrimination, hate speech, and bias-motivated crimes." 

Through the proclamation, the Olympia City Council declared its commitment to embracing diversity and inclusion by paying tribute to Hindu heritage through education, acknowledgment, and celebration within our community." 

Representatives of the Hindu Swayamsavak Sangh community accepted the proclamation.  

"Hinduism is more than just a religion – it is a way of life, a science that teaches us how to live happily and in harmony," said Sangh Jugal Thakor of Hindu Swayamsavak. "When we are stressed, we often turn to meditation and yoga, practices rooted in the Hindu tradition." 

Sangh highlighted the Hindu culture and the community's deep commitment to services. "Our Hindu community loves to give back, serving meals to the underserved every weekend, volunteering with local tribes and mental health organizations, and even building tiny homes." 

Sangh also noted the growing Hindu community in Olympia. He said that last year's Diwali celebration, the festival of lights, drew over 500 attendees from the Olympia community.

Sangh also announced that they recently established the first Hindu temple in the city, located on Black Lake Boulevard.  

"This is a significant milestone for us, providing a dedicated space for worship, community, and the sharing of our rich cultural traditions," Sangh explained. He extended an open invitation to the community, encouraging all to visit the temple and experience the colors and flavors of Hindu festivals like Diwali and Holi. 

"I appreciate the Hindu community's ability to lead with their values and extend grace to other cultures," Mayor Dontae Payne said. " 

The mayor expressed gratitude for the Hindu community's continued sharing of their rich heritage and culture. He said the aspects of Hindu traditions, such as yoga, meditation, and the concept of karma, have been adapted and incorporated into Western or secular practices.
