Lacey invites residents to join water conservation challenge

Posted

The City of Lacey is challenging its community members to conserve water this month -- and there’s a prize for the winner!

At stake is a Toyota Highlander Hybrid for a local charity chosen by the winner, as well as $3,000 for winners’ home utilities.

“This campaign helps bring awareness to the importance of preserving Lacey's valuable water resources and promoting conservation,” said Mayor Andy Ryder, “which is the most cost-effective mechanism for sustaining affordable water rates.”

In a press release, the city announced its participation in the National Mayors’ Challenge for Water Conservation, where city mayors around the country invite their constituents to pledge to conserve water, along with other natural resources; as a friendly competition between their cities.

Sponsored by the Wynland Foundation with Toyota as a major partner, the competition is divided into five categories based on population, with Lacey falling under the second, 30,000-99,999 category with its population of around 53,526 in 2020 reported by the United States Census.

Cities with the highest percentage of their population pledging the water conservation challenge win.

According to the contest website, 164,397,202 gallons of water have been saved through pledges for the competition; with more than $50,000 given to 300 winners all over the United States.

Pledges can be made on the contest website. Lacey residents can contact Water Resources Specialist Linsey Fields at 360-486-8707 or waterresources@ci.lacey.wa.us for more information.
