The Thurston Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) officially joined the country, proclaiming October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The board said the proclamation is a tribute to those who lost their lives to breast cancer. It also recognizes "courageous women and men who are living with this disease and rejoice with those who are breast cancer survivors."

Along with the proclamation, the board also urged residents, government agencies, private businesses, nonprofit organizations, and other groups to join programs to advocate for comprehensive cancer care and raise awareness.

Thurston County's Disease Control and Prevention Division Director Erin Birklid said the proclamation plays a significant role in promoting the significance of breast cancer screening and prevention.

"By raising awareness about breast cancer risk factors, we can educate individuals about the importance of early detection," said Birklid.

Nichole Woolsey attended the Tuesday, October 10 meeting to represent the American Cancer Society in accepting the presentation.

Woolsey emphasized the relevance of knowing the family's history and discussing cancer with doctors. She also recommended talking about breast cancer screening at the age of 40.

"I'm so grateful that the county makes it a priority to talk about breast cancer," said Woolsey

Resident Karen Waddington shared her journey in surviving breast cancer when she was diagnosed in 2020.

"Screening and early detection is what saved my life," said Waddington.

Another resident also shared her experience as a caregiver of a cancer patient. Amanda Hanks said that her mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer when Hanks was just 18 years old.

"I just like to talk about how important it is to honor our caregivers who are taking care of people who are going through breast cancer,” shared Hanks.

Commissioner Gary Edwards also revealed that he is also a caregiver for his daughter, who has cancer, adding that he is grateful for all the department's work in bringing awareness on the matter. Commissioner Tye Menser also echoed the importance of early detection, which has helped his mother in her cancer journey.
