Thurston’s Board of Health recognizes March 31 as Trans Visibility Day

Advocating for dignity and equal rights in building inclusive spaces and protecting the most vulnerable members of the transgender community

The Thurston County Board of Health (BOH) officially proclaimed March 31 as International Transgender Visibility Day during its meeting on March 12.

The board’s proclamation acknowledges the tireless efforts of transgender advocacy groups in advocating for dignity and equal rights in building inclusive spaces and protecting the most vulnerable members of the transgender community.

“Thurston County recognizes the significant contributions made by transgender people and affirms they are vital members of our community,” the proclamation read.

Lacey council member and BOH board member Robin Vazquez emphasized the significance of such proclamations, adding that the community faces legislative hurdles and political backlash in various states.

“The transgender community has been under attack in the legislative and political arena in many places throughout the United States in recent years,” said Vazquez. “There are dozens of anti-transgender bills at both the state and federal levels being introduced.”

Vazquez underscored the importance of affirming the presence and contributions of the transgender community.

“We are making an affirmative statement that we welcome the transgender community, we recognize their value and their contributions to Thurston County, and we want them to feel safe here.”

International Transgender Visibility Day, founded in 2009 by U.S.-based transgender activist Rachel Crandall, annually celebrates transgender accomplishments while highlighting ongoing challenges and advocating for equal rights.

Organizations worldwide participate in this day to honor transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals while raising awareness about the work needed to safeguard transgender lives.

Doesn't the Thurston County BOH have more pressing issues? In that vein, how about International Heterosexual Day? Or Heterogender Day? Get real!

Sorry Claire is so opposed to recognizing the accomplishments and need for safety for an abused minority population in our midst. Are they (Claire) also opposed to the Civil Rights Act of 1965 because Congress had more important things to do? What can be more important than advocating for equal rights for all? Sorry, too, to see such bitterness.

Chappell, the civil rights act should be eliminated. People with mental illness need compassion and help, not affirmation of their illness.

I am disheartened that this group chose Easter (He has risen indeed) for this proclamation... I suppose we should have figured this sort of action after we voted for Robin
