Thurston County Public Health and Social Services (PHSS) is urging residents to avoid contact with Lake Lawrence and Clear Lake due to toxic algae blooms detected in both bodies of water. This follows yesterday’s story of the same hazard at Offut Lake

Lab results taken on October 15, 2024, revealed Microcystin toxin levels exceeding the state recreation guideline of 8ug/L in both lakes. Lake Lawrence had a toxin level of 262 ug/L, while Clear Lake measured 33 ug/L. Microcystins pose a severe health risk to humans and animals.

To protect your health, avoid algae-infested water. Keep pets and livestock away from algae blooms. Additionally, avoid water activities such as swimming, wading, windsurfing, and water skiing in affected areas.

Do not eat fish caught in affected waters during a bloom. Avoid boating near scum. Thurston County PHSS will continue to monitor the situation and collect weekly samples.
