SMU Basketball alumnus Brett Reed has signed a professional basketball contract to play in Bulgaria, joining BC Spartak Pleven for the 2024-25 season after brief spells in Germany and Sweden.

Reed graduated from Saint Martin’s in 2022 after an incredible senior campaign for the Saints, leading them to the GNAC championship. The six-foot-eight forward was named All-Conference First Team in his final collegiate season after averaging 14.0 points and 8.4 rebounds while leading the whole GNAC in offensive boards.

Last season, he played in Sweden for the Köping Stars and averaged 16.5 points with 8.6 rebounds in the Swedish Basketball League, Sweden’s highest tier of basketball.

“Brett Reed is the ultimate mix of talent and toughness. He plays with a mean streak, and his motor runs hot, so he’ll be great in any system, country, or league he plays in. We’re thrilled that his professional career has let him travel the world and experience so much at such a young age,” said Saint Martin’s coach Aaron Landon on Reed’s contributions to the Saints.

BC Spartak Pleven is a two-time champion of the Bulgarian National Basketball League and competes in the European North Basketball League (ENBL), a regional basketball league for clubs based in northern, central, and eastern Europe. Pleven’s recent success includes being the runner-up of the 2024 Bulgarian Basketball Super Cup.

As of this writing, Reed debuted for Spartak Pleven in the ENBL on October 1. He came off the bench with 14 points and nine rebounds in his first game with his new team, their 83-68 defeat over Czech Republic side Opava.
