A man sought to scrap a truck and trailer stolen from a Seattle construction site last Friday morning.
Sylvester Tuggles, 48, identified by police as a transient, arrived at Sutter Metals at approximately 8 a.m. on April 23, having driven the truck and trailer into the yard. He requested to scrap both vehicles.
Sutter’s manager, Matt Buhanghang, told Tuggles that he needed to see the vehicles’ titles before they could be scrapped. Tuggles said that the truck was a commercial vehicle and he should be able to scrap it without a title. Buhanghang decided to call Lacey Police after Tuggles refused to leave the yard after being denied cash for the vehicles.
Lacey Police contacted Tuggles, who said that he was just released from King County Jail. Once released, Tuggles told police that an unknown person gave him the vehicle.
Lacey Police were able to trace the vehicle’s origin to Gary Merlino Construction of Renton, which confirmed that the truck had been stolen from a job site in Seattle. Upon searching the vehicle, Lacey Police discovered an access badge from Boeing with the name “Gary Merlino Construction” on it.
The vehicle was left at the Sutter Metals for a Gary Merlino Construction’s representative to pick up.
Tuggles was arrested for possession of stolen property and booked into the Nisqually Jail.
