Lacey Commission on Equity recommends adoption of diversity and equity plan

Posted

In a move towards it charter of fostering an inclusive community, the Lacey Commission on Equity has approved a motion recommending that the city council review and adopt the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Strategic Plan.

Initiated in 2021, the DEIB Strategic Plan is a collaborative effort between the Commission on Equity and city staff. It aims to create a strategic guide to advance and support equity efforts in the greater Lacey community from 2024 to 2030.

“Through this process, we have been meeting with different departments, learning about what they have been doing, what the city does, and what other partner entities and organizations do,” said Shannon Kelley-Fong, Lacey’s Assistant City Manager.

“We've also been doing extensive outreach and engagement with community members.”

The comprehensive plan outlines Lacey's vision for an equitable, welcoming environment where diversity is celebrated, opportunities are accessible, and barriers to participation are removed.

The plan includes Vision and Mission statements, Values, and four overarching goals, each with multiple strategies and baseline measures identified for 2024.

The first goal, Workforce and Work Environment, focuses on an equity plan, hiring and retention, and development and workplace improvements.

The second goal, Community Engagement and Access, emphasizes communications, engagement, relationships, and collaboration.

The third goal, Policies, Programs, and Services, addresses city policies, city services, public safety, parks, culture, recreation, infrastructure, utilities, acknowledgments, and events.

The fourth goal, Livability, includes economic development, housing and homeless services, social services, partnerships, and environmental concerns.

The Strategic Plan also includes essential elements such as a Land Acknowledgement, a forthcoming Lacey City Council Message, a Commission on Equity message and background, demographic information, key terms, an overview of COE community engagement efforts and analysis, clarification of what the plan is and is not, city roles and accountability measures with statuses and baselines for 2024.

The recommendation now awaits review and adoption by the Lacey City Council.
