People with mental health issues don’t get a free pass to destroy property and commit burglary. Many people with mental health issues in our community can thank heavy drug use for their condition. At some point for them it was a deliberate choice to start using, but most can’t muster the willpower to stop without help. Involuntary confinement without access to drugs is exactly what these addicts need. If that means jail, it’s not ideal but better than nothing. Jail is far more compassionate than leaving them to sort it out on the street… which they won’t.
