USL Women 2024: FC Olympia dispatches Eugene for second league win

Posted

The women’s team of FC Olympia won their first away game this season after peppering Lane United FC, 4-1, at their home turf at Civic Park in Eugene, OR last Friday, May 24, as they remain undefeated in the Northwest Division of the USL W League.

Artesians Head Coach Ben Willis flexed the team's immense squad depth and rotated his roster as he retained only three players from the starting lineup who beat Tacoma in the home opener to kick off proceedings in Eugene, ensuring starts for other deserving players including a nod for goalkeeper Hannah Dickinson while keeping sidelined players rested for future fixtures.

Despite the new starting lineup, FC Olympia came out swinging from the opening whistle as Sadie Sider-Echenburg lowered the floodgates early for her second goal this season the Artesians took the lead three minutes in, followed by another sucker punch from Honoka Hamano’s goal to make it 2-0 in less than eight minutes of play.

Olympia High School alumnus Katelyn Rigg also opened her goal account for her hometown semi-pro football club as she scored in the 42nd minute before a consolation goal was scored by Lane United FC’s Alison Monroe just before halftime.

Sophia Hanson placed the cherry on top for FC Olympia as she buried the match's final goal in the 75th minute to close out this routine win for the Artesians.

The backline duo of Brooklyn Lee and Ella Karolak was vital in holding the line for the Artesians as they never conceded again in the second half, with the gaffer giving them plaudits as co-awardees of the player of the match.

FC Olympia is the first team in the Northwest Division to tally two wins as they currently sit on top of the division table.

The ladies will continue their USL W conquest away from home as they travel to Salem, OR to face Capital FC Atletica on May 31, Friday. They will then return home to South Sound Stadium to face a friendly match with Seattle Reign FC II, who currently plays for the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) and will go back to USL W action at home in the reverse fixture with Lane United.
