Twice-convicted drunk driver, allegedly ‘blackout drunk,’ busted again last Sunday

A Tenino woman with two driving under the influence (DUI) convictions was arrested by Tumwater police after allegedly driving while “blackout drunk.”

Melissa Lee Cline, 36, was arrested on June 5 after a reporting party told authorities that the suspect was out of control at the La Quinta hotel.

The reporting party said Cline had a 12-pack of Bud Light seltzers and four to five other drinks at the bar. She was described as “blackout drunk” and was said to have nearly hit another vehicle while backing out of her parking spot.

An officer later located Cline’s vehicle in a parking lot on the 5600 block of Capitol Boulevard. The car, a red Honda Civic, then drove out of the lot and crossed the dividing line between two southbound lanes, the officer said.

Cline parked at a Shell station after the officer conducted a stop. The officer noted “a strong odor of intoxicants” as the suspect rolled down her window after fumbling with her keys to turn the car on.

The officer said Cline was “slurring her words and her eyes appeared to be squinted and almost looked like they were closed.”

Cline performed poorly in a field sobriety test, according to the police report. The suspect lost her balance during the walk-and-turn and was unable to perform the one-leg stand, police said.

Police said the suspect blew 0.219% on a breathalyzer test, more than double the state’s blood-alcohol limit of 0.08%.

Cline was booked into the Nisqually Jail for DUI. Police noted that the suspect had two prior DUI convictions within the last ten years.
