Tumwater Public Works Committee authorizes bids for Israel Road improvements

Tumwater Public Works Committee authorized city staff on Thursday, February 8, to solicit bids for the construction of pedestrian and bicycle improvements on a portion of Israel Road from Linderson Way to Capitol Boulevard and a segment of Linderson Way south of Israel Road.

The city engineer’s estimate for the project is $1.5 million to $2 million.

Engineering Services Manager Bill Lindauer told the committee that the project involves the repair of damaged pavements, as well as the implementation of new safety features.

As part of the project's repair portion, the city will overlay the road with asphalt, update old utility trenching and stormwater drainages, and apply new pavement markings.

The city will also reconstruct select sidewalks, ramps, and driveways to meet American Disability Act requirements. At the same time, the five-foot bike lane on the road will also be increased to six lanes.

Two pavement crossings, one on Tumwater High School and the other on Timberland Library, will be improved by constructing a refuge island in the middle of the road. A new crossing will also be built near the fire station.

The project is funded by federal grants from the carbon reduction and transportation alternatives programs, which sum up to $903,700. The city matched the two grants for $1,154,600 sourced from the city’s Transportation Benefit District and the capital facilities plan fund. The grants were administered and awarded by Thurston Regional Planning Council.

Lindauer said that if the city successfully hires a contractor by March, construction may begin in May and be completed by June.
