Tumwater picks contractor to build new park in The Preserve

Posted

Tumwater city council authorized Mayor Debbie Sullivan to sign a contract with Tapani Inc. for the construction of The Preserve Park during a meeting held yesterday, November 15.

Preserve Park will be located on Aster Street and 91st Street on the south side of Olympia Regional Airport. City Administrator John Doan said that the city purchased the property in 2020 and awarded a contract to a supplier for the purchase and installation of equipment needed in the park in the following year.

The park is approximately 0.5 acres and is adjacent to a 2.9-acre stormwater infiltration pond which will be incorporated into the park as an additional play area.

The site will include furnishing, a 24 by 24-foot picnic shelter, a half-court basketball court, five-foot high triple-wide concrete slides, a zip line, and climbing boulders, according to documents prepared by city staff.

Tapani Inc, a company from Battle Ground, Washington, was the lowest bidder for the project, offering to construct the park for $579,793.74, lower than the city engineer’s estimate of $671,098.13.

Doan said that they will give Tapani Inc a notice to proceed by the second week of January and will give them 30 days to complete the project. Barring bad weather, the project is expected to be completed on February 21.

There were seven other bidders, namely, Nyco and ACI Inc, who also bid lower than the city engineer’s estimate, along with NW Cascade Inc, KBH Construct Co, Rognlin's Inc, Ceccanti, and Sound Pacific Construction LLC. The project is funded through the Metropolitan Park District.

This is admirable,I guess, considering that the preserve was originally meant to be just that...a green spot amid growing development. AT one time it hosted cattle. Now it's full of houses. Half an acre isn't much of a park.

ANd, if the Port of Olympia and the Dept. of Transportation have their ways, soon the Preserve will be squished between TWO airports...Olympia's Regional airport will be sending 737s right over your heads, flights ever ten minutes, all day, every day., starting as soon as they finished paving the extensions to their runways. And the Mega airport, called Thurston International, will add hundreds more. Enjoy your non stop noise, you residents of THe Preserve.

Or fight the airports NOW. Go to Stop the Olympia Airport and sign the petition and fight the expansion. And fight the Mega airport.
