A 26-year-old Tumwater man was killed in a “seemingly unprovoked” shooting at a WinCo Foods parking lot in Olympia, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) said yesterday.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched Saturday, Sept. 17, to a complaint of shots heard in the 1100 block of Horne Street NE, according to a TCSO news release.
Deputies arrived in the area but did not locate the source of the gunshots, although they noted that a man was walking in the area shortly after the complaint was made.
About 30 minutes later, another caller said that his brother was dead with multiple gunshot wounds after returning to his vehicle in the parking lot after shopping, prompting deputies to search for the man they saw walking earlier.
Lacey police located the said man walking along the 6500 block of Martin Way E. He was detained without incident.
The suspect, a 23-year-old Olympia man, was booked into the Thurston County Jail for first-degree murder. TCSO is currently withholding his identity as charges have yet to be filed.
Surveillance footage and witnesses on Horne Street placed the suspect in the WinCo Foods parking lot at the time of the shooting, the TCSO said. A K-9 track also led authorities to the area where the man was detained.
A 9mm pistol and ammunition were recovered from the suspect’s backpack.
“At this time, it does not appear that the victim and suspect were connected in any way,” the TCSO said.
