Tumwater's city leadership team proposed changing the city’s logo as one in a list of potential measures to advance racial equity in the city at the council meeting yesterday.
The city council expressed support and optimism in the list of plans and actions to reflect the diversity, equity, and inclusivity in the city
"I'm impressed with this. This met my expectations when we started," councilmember Angela Jefferson said. "You can tell that everyone had their heart and worked seriously on this."
Councilmember Michael Althauser expressed his concerns about the current city logo, describing it as "outdated."
"Symbols matter; symbols are important. I think we need to do it," Althauser said. "It's going to be expensive, and it's going to take a lot of time, but we need to do it."
City Administrator John Doan also presented proposed policies and implementation at the city level, including enhancing relationships with area tribes, examining race in transportation planning, having appropriate ethnic celebrations and other measures to advance racial equity.
The city's previous efforts to advance racial equity in the city include the 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge in partnership with the Tumwater School Board.

So, I assume the new logo will include a member of each skin color: white, black, yellow, brown, and red. And, of course, male, female, and transgender. That should be most impressive! Can't wait to see it!
