SPSCC Clippers earn first win of the season in 4-1 drubbing over Lane CC

The South Puget Sound Community College men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the conference season as they pummeled the Lane Community College Titans 4-1 in lopsided fashion on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Regional Athletic complex in Lacey.

Four goals from four different goalscorers got the job done for the Clippers for the three points in the tally as they now improve to a 1-1-1 win-draw-loss record.

Fresh off a 1-0 defeat against Southwestern Oregon, where they lost despite hitting 19 scoring attempts, the Clippers carried on with their relentless attacking brand of football. This time, though, they were more clinical in shots on target as freshman winger Alejandro De La Rosa opened the scoring at 15 minutes in with the lone goal of the half.

The Clippers opened the second half reenergized as Mo Diallo’s press on the Titans’ backline was rewarded with an interception. He quickly took advantage, sprinting past everyone and the keeper to double the advantage.

Diallo dazzled again in this Clipper blitz, seizing the momentum as he took on the defenders before sliding the ball to a waiting Edwin Quintana. The latter easily tapped the ball into the open net to make it three in just over 50 minutes in.

The cherry on top came courtesy of Clipper captain and English player Alex Canning. He cut the ball past the edge of the penalty area before a strike from 25 yards out made it 4-0 at the 67th minute, sealing the victory. The Titans managed a consolation goal at the 81st minute via Griffin Rea.

The dominance of the Clippers was apparent in the box scores, as SPSCC had 20 shots on target compared to only eight from Lane. Clipper goalkeeper Hayden Sciera made two saves and came within ten minutes of securing a clean sheet.

“Before the game versus Lane, we all felt this was a must-win game. After forgetting about the previous result, the team brought high energy and quality into this game. We had belief from the start of the match, and we were ruthless in front of goal,” remarked SPSCC captain Canning in a postgame interview.

The Clippers will travel to Portland to face Portland Community College on Wednesday at 2:15 p.m. PST, and then they will make the long drive to Rogue Community College on Saturday with kickoff at noon. Both away games will complete their games versus the Oregon colleges of the southern region.
