Peyton Rhyne’s strike stuns Bushnell for Evergreen’s first win of the season

Posted

After a winless drought of ten games, which includes six conference games of one-sided defeats and close draws, the Evergreen State College women’s soccer team finally got its first dub of the season, thanks to Peyton Rhyne’s goal in the first half at the expense of Oregon-side Bushnell University at the Geoduck Pitch last Saturday, October 12.

Rhyne struck a first-time hit from 24 yards out in the 14th minute, coming off a set piece from midfielder Danean Wurlitzer, rocketing the ball to the left side past the Beacons goalkeeper Keira Wilkins.

The Geoducks defended crazily after scoring to retain the slim one-goal lead. Evergreen goalkeeper Anna Varela had four big stops in the whole game, including two big saves, one from each half, against Bushnell striker Indiana Chambers on the way to claiming the clean sheet.

In the 72nd minute, Evergreen almost doubled the lead as Peyton Rhyne rose again with another lofted attempt at the box, which just hit the near post.

Rhyne’s lone goal was the only shot on target for the Geoducks in the match, and it was all they needed for that sweet maiden victory in a season that started with low morale. Bushnell had four shots on target in their defeat.

“Peyton stepped up as a senior to get a goal. She’s been searching for one for a few games now,” said Evergreen women’s soccer head coach Kate Green. “Anna kept the shutout with two big saves to keep us ahead in the game.”

Hopefully, these three points (in the standings) will add some motivation for the weeks ahead,” Green continued.

The Geoducks moved out of the bottom of the conference table, improving to five points from one win, two draws, and four defeats, while the Beacons replaced them at the lower end with one win and six defeats.

Evergreen will take on Rocky Mountain College as conference play continues on Friday, October 18, at Geoduck Pitch. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. PDT.
