The Olympia School Board approved yesterday a $175,646,680 budget for 2022-23.

The most significant chunk of the funds will go towards teaching activities and teaching support at $110.45 million and $18.10 million, respectively. School administrations will be allocated $9.68 million, while the central administration will be given $12.81 million. Additional support activities will be allocated $24.60 million.

Regarding programs, regular instruction gets the biggest share, with $89.84 million, followed by special education instruction and support services at $32.61 million and $30.56 million, respectively.

The funding for the budget will be sourced from school revenues and other sources amounting to $168,347,457.  Most of the revenue will be from general purpose state funds worth $91.18 million, followed by local taxes at $27.68 million.

Funding for next year’s budget will be supported with a beginning fund balance of $12,620,856, meaning that the fund balance of next year’s budget will close at $5,321,633.

In shaping next year’s budget, Superintendent Patrick Murphy noted that the main considerations were the decreased enrollment rate and the reduction in federal relief funds related to COVID-19.

Enrollment during 2019-20 were 10,066 before falling to 9,644 in 2020-21. Enrollment continues to fall, with 9,543 students projected to enroll for 2022-23.

With the budget approved, the next step will be to submit it to the Capital Region Educational Service District by August 31.
