An Olympia man allegedly broke into a house and threatened one of the homeowners with a knife.

Olympia police arrested Domique Deangelo Darden, 34, on March 5 after a reported burglary on the 1500 block of Redwood Place.

The reporting party was a woman who said her husband saw a man in their attic with a knife.

Police arrived to find Darden being held by the homeowners’ neighbors. The suspect was detained without incident.

The male homeowner told police that he went into their garage and noticed that the light was turned off, the door was shut and locked, and there was a flashlight that he did not recognize by the door.

He spoke to his wife, who told him that the light should have been on, and the door should have been open, with no flashlight in the garage.

The man returned to their garage and saw a ladder propped up against the fridge, then looked up at the attic to see a pair of shoes.

He hit the shoes and realized that a person was wearing them. The man said he told the suspect to leave, but Darden leaned forward and showed him a knife, though not in a threatening manner.

The couple quickly moved to the house of their neighbor, who grabbed a BB gun to help.

The neighbor said he called out for the suspect, at which point Darden poked his head out of the doorway and stayed there until police arrived.

Officers found a large butcher knife in the homeowners’ garage. A search of Darden at the jail yielded a knife sharpener and narcotics such as methamphetamine and fentanyl pills.

Darden was booked at the Thurston County Jail for first-degree burglary and also third-degree introducing contraband into the jail.
