Olympia High School's Freedom Farmers harvested potatoes and garlic from the Capitol Campus food garden on July 11.

Olympia High School has partnered with the Thurston County Food Bank for these harvests for the last 12 years.

"The real strength of all of these programs, and what they mean to individuals' lives, is the way that communities and neighborhoods are coming together to support them," said James Wirth, Field-to-Food-Bank Coordinator for Thurston County Food Bank in a news release.

Wirth added that the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) and the Thurston County food bank’s partnership at the Capitol Gardens has been going on for 20 years now.

"I've walked around this place a lot with my friends,” Dana, an Olympia student, said. “I've made so many memories here.”

Similar to the thousands of people visiting the campus, Dana views the grounds as a place to enjoy with others. Volunteers like Dana aim to give back by serving the community.

“The work they all do is vital to our collective well-being, and it’s an honor to continue nurturing this partnership together,” the news release stated.

They didn't mention GRUB which partnered with Olympia High School to get students involved in planting and harvesting. They received high school credits for math, history, English and Social Studies. Math because they ran a farm stand and also had to calculate things for the farm. English because they had to write reports. History was dealing with farming and feeding people over the years. Social Studies where they studied helping others.

Helpful report to learn a little bit a out the Oly Freedom Farmers. However these AI assisted stories lack context and familiarity with the key players involved in the project. Better to pay a human reporter to write the whole story using their research and writing skills instead of an AI bot that guesses.
