Off-duty Intercity Transit driver crashes, accused of DUI

Claims he relapsed after 13 years sober

An off-duty Intercity Transit bus driver ran over a traffic sign at a roundabout and collided with a tree with enough impact that it deployed two airbags on his Jeep Cherokee last Saturday.

Bill Moody, 57, allegedly blew as high as .122 on the Dräger Alcotest® 9510 conducted by Olympia Police. The legal limit is 0.08.

When Olympia Police arrived at the scene just before 7:00 a.m. on April 24, Moody was leaning heavily against the hood of his damaged 2007 Jeep and had a hard time walking. Moody was wearing an orange traffic vest and Intercity Transit coat and uniform. According to the police report, Moody attempted to “downplay” the collision by reporting that he drifted off the roadway to avoid hitting “an animal” in the road.

Moody provided Olympia Police with multiple answers when asked where he was coming from. He claimed that he was a Tacoma firefighter. He then told the officer that he was at Intercity Transit earlier, but not needed to drive an IT route, thus told to go home.

Olympia Police noticed Moody’s droopy eyes and slurred words. Moody denied drinking alcohol but later admitted that he had drunk vodka at home the evening prior.

Moody later admitted that he had relapsed after 13 years of staying sober, drinking for the past 6 months. He told officers that he would attempt to re-enter Alcoholics Anonymous due to his recent actions.

Moody was booked into the Olympia Jail for driving under the influence.
