The Thurston Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) gathered on Tuesday, November 21 to retroactively declare November 16 as National Adoption Day.

The aim was to acknowledge the significance of adoption and inspire widespread community engagement in understanding its profound impact.

“Families who choose the life-changing path of adoption make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of some of the most vulnerable children and youth in our state,” the proclamation read.

This collective effort, mirrored in celebrations across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico, is a testament to the joint commitment to provide children the opportunity to thrive in stable, caring, and loving family environments.

Moreover, the aim was to inspire and encourage individuals to consider making a transformative difference in a child’s life through adoption.

Thurston County Judge Christine Schaller was present at the meeting to accept the proclamation. She highlighted the significance of the day by noting that eight children were officially welcomed into their forever families on November 16.

The event drew approximately 150 attendees, signifying the community’s support and enthusiasm for celebrating National Adoption Day.

“It was very successful,” said Schaller.

Commissioner Tye Menser expressed his appreciation for such events, acknowledging the emotionally touching and inspiring moments witnessed during the legal processes that led to positive outcomes for children.

“Every kid deserves a good time in this world,” added Commissioner Gary Edwards, emphasizing the essential need for every child to experience a nurturing and supportive environment.
