Recreational vehicle fire starts at Olympia gas station

Posted

OLYMPIA –– A recreational vehicle caught fire at a Texaco gas station on Black Lake Boulevard and Cooper Point Road in Olympia early Friday morning, according to Olympia Fire Department officials, resulting in the total loss of the rig.  There were no injuries.

A single occupant was filling gas canisters at the gas station, although the gas canisters weren’t approved to contain gas, according to Lt. Mike Buchanan of the Olympia Fire Department. The gas then came into contact with other items in the RV, causing the fire.

Despite the gas pump next to the mobile home sustaining some damage, the gas remained in the gas station’s system and didn’t add to the fire.

An eyewitness told The JOLT that the smell of burning plastic was so strong it covered West Olympia.

“The roof over the pumps was pretty severely damaged,” Lt. Buchanan said. “I would say the fire was extinguished within 10 minutes.”

The fire broke out at 6:50 a.m., and was out by 7:45 a.m., Buchanan said.
