National Donut Day

Local donut shop also helps the less fortunate

Dora Torres brings meaning to National Donut Day

Posted

National Donut Day is celebrated in this country on the first Friday of June.  In 1938, the day came about as a fundraising initiative by the Salvation Army to aid those individuals economically suffering during the Great Depression.

Additionally, it served as a tribute to the brave women who during World War I provided soldiers on the front lines in France with donuts.

Dora Torres, the owner of Simple & Delicious Donuts, understands this.

“We celebrate the day every year,” the native of Guatemala said.  “It’s a day we have to do something special.”

Growing up as the eldest of four girls, Torres liked to work in the kitchen with her mother.  After immigrating to this country, she worked hard and saved her money.  One day her sister told her about a person who owned a local bakery and could use some help.

Torres began by working four hours a day, and as she did she learned as much as she could about the making and selling of donuts.

“I began to think that ‘I can do this,’ that I could start my own business,” she said.

In 2017 she opened Simple and Delicious Donuts located at 7914 Martin Way in Lacey. Her hard work and determination has paid off when others had told her she would not succeed.

Her business' core values are clear and concise:

  • Serve the best and freshest donuts every single day; and
  • Donate leftover donuts to the less fortunate.

“On the very first day that we opened, if we had any extra donuts we would go downtown near the Union Gospel Mission and give them away to those in need,” Torres pointed out.

Simple & Delicious Donut Shop will celebrate National Donut Day by offering special pricing on a box of a dozen (or more) glazed, sugar or chocolate donuts.

“Consistency and making a good product are important to me,” concluded Torres.  “But it is also important to help those who can use some help.”

The shop is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

In my experience, they have a hard time keeping sufficient stocks of chocolate-covered old fashioned, my fave. On more than one occasion, I've left without making a purchase.

They have absolutely wonderful, fresh and delicious donuts. If they don't have what I'm craving....there are lots of different choices! I've never been disappointed!

AugieH should sit down, shut up and go back to his/her coloring book.

The fact that the Simple & Delicious Donut Shop does not have his/her favorite "chocolate-covered old fashioned" donuts when he/she graces the shop with his/her presence has absolutely nothing to do with what the article was about. It seems that AugieH isn't happy unless he/see is unhappy.

The owner of the shop has worked hard to build and maintain a successful business that not only provides delicious donuts for her customers, but she also gives back to the community.

I doubt that AugieH can say as much.

    Your coloring book awaits.
