The Lacey City Council has officially designated March as American Red Cross Month, honoring the humanitarian efforts of volunteers and donors in the community.

The proclamation, signed by Mayor Andy Ryder on behalf of the City Council, highlights the history and legacy of the American Red Cross.

Founded by Clara Barton in 1881, the organization has dedicated itself to preventing and alleviating human suffering for over 140 years.

“Today, more than 140 years later, we honor the kindness and generosity of Red Cross volunteers who continue to carry out Clara's life-saving legacy,” the council said in its proclamation.

The document acknowledges the vital role played by Red Cross volunteers in Lacey, particularly in times of crisis.

“The contributions of local [Lacey] Red Cross volunteers give hope to the most vulnerable in their darkest hours, whether it's providing emergency shelter, food, and comfort for families devastated by local disasters like home fires,” the proclamation read.

Moreover, the proclamation underscores the collaborative efforts between the Red Cross and local organizations like the Lacey Veteran Services Hub. Together, they sponsor events such as the Thurston County Veterans Resource Fair, which offers essential resources to veterans and active-duty military personnel in the area.

Ryder emphasized the significance of supporting the Red Cross's humanitarian mission and encouraged all community members to get involved.

The mayor added that by volunteering, donating, or learning life-saving skills, individuals can strengthen the community's resilience and promote the spirit of compassion and solidarity.
