During their July 16 meeting, the Lacey City Council recognized Astro, the courthouse service dog, for his outstanding service, dedication, and commitment to the public.

Astro, who has touched thousands of lives and made a significant difference in the community, is being honored as he enters retirement.

For the past 11 years, Astro has served as a courthouse service dog, becoming the first "Director of Canine Services" at the Monarch Children's Justice and Advocacy Center, a program run by the Community Action Council of Lewis, Mason, and Thurston Counties. This center provides critical support to children and families in the region.

Astro's duties included accompanying children during interviews, medical appointments, mental health services, and courthouse appearances, among other functions. Throughout his career, Astro has provided comfort and assistance to an estimated 3,000 children, family members, staff, and community partners.

His service extended beyond the office, as he also supported community members during traumatic events, notably deploying to the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas.

According to the council proclamation, research indicates that service dogs play a crucial role in decreasing stress, increasing well-being, and promoting calm in both children and adults.

The recognition of Astro’s contributions is especially timely, as July is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The proclamation highlights the severe impact of child abuse, neglect, and other traumas on the community's quality of life.

The proclamation noted that Astro’s work, along with that of his handlers at the Monarch Children's Justice and Advocacy Center, underscores the importance of vigilance and early intervention in preventing child abuse.

“Astro has touched thousands of lives and made a difference in our community. We thank Astro and wish him a happy retirement,” stated Lacey Mayor Andy Ryder.
