Lacey calls out against racism, honors Black History Month

Posted

In solidarity with the nation's effort in dismantling racism, the Lacey City Council met on Thursday and proclaimed the month of February as Black History Month.

Lacey Mayor Andy Ryder said the proclamation is a way to celebrate the achievements and contributions made by Black and African Americans to the economic, cultural, spiritual, and political developments of society.

"[I] urge all community members to recognize the continued need to dismantle racism and to build a society that is more just, peaceful, and prosperous for all," said Ryder.

Lacey's proclamation also honored the black community's "invaluable and lasting" contribution to their business, education, politics, science, medicine, military, sports, and the arts.

"In spite of abhorrent attempts to enslave and exclude them, Blacks have made invaluable and lasting contributions to our community as a result of their determination, hard work, and perseverance," the statement read.

Councilmembers said they are committed to "creating a community where all who come here can feel safe and welcome."

Blacks and African Americans make up 6.2% of Lacey's population, based on the 2021 data provided by the US Census Bureau.

This year's theme is "Black Health and Wellness," as declared by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

In his national proclamation for Black History Month, President Joe Biden said they would work on bringing down the costs of child care, housing, education, and health care as a step to dismantle structural inequities that have served as barriers for Black families.

So glad Lacey "woke" up and did this. At least for black people. Forget Latino, Asian, and others. I guess they are not as much a threat.
