Open house event will run from 11 - 2 on Tuesday

Thurston county’s oldest broadcast station, KGY 95.3, will be commemorating its centennial year of licensed broadcasting tomorrow, April 5.

The station will also host an open house for clients, community members, and former KGY employees at its waterfront building tomorrow, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This is a big day for KGY, our employees, family, and this community,” said KGY, INC President & CEO Jennifer Kerry in a press release.

As part of its 100th-year celebration, the station is calling on its listeners to share their stories and memories of the station.

“We’re looking for photos, stickers, flyers, audio recordings, and other memorabilia,” says KGY in their centenary website.

A long-form noon show hosted by Kevin “The Brit” Huffer on the day will feature popular KGY guests and historic audio clips broadcast by the station over the century. “Tuesday (April 5th) is a very special day, and I’m proud to host a noon-hour program that’s a trip through time including familiar KGY voices,” quoted Huffer in the station statement.

Started by Fr. Sebastian Ruth, KGY started from a log cabin on the St. Martin’s campus in Lacey. It now broadcasts in what is now considered a local landmark: a building standing on stilts over Budd Inlet on Port of Olympia property.

Fans and friends of KGY are invited to submit their contributions here.

Congratulztions KGY! I vividly remember listening to you on my transistor radio when I was 8 years old in 1970. I had to be in bed by 9 whether I was tired or not. Night after night I fell asleep to 1970's top 40 tunes. Now, 52 years later, I take great pleasure in tuning in daily to listen to the sound track of my childhood.
