Tumwater Middle School was temporarily placed on lockout after a minor was seen heading to campus with an object later identified to be a toy that looked like a handgun.

In a Facebook post, the Tumwater Police Department said it received a report Monday morning about a juvenile heading toward Tumwater Middle School while armed with what looked like a handgun.

The school was immediately placed on lockout, and arriving students were not allowed to leave their buses until the issue was resolved.

Tumwater police said its School Resource Officer was already on campus when the report came in, and other officers were dispatched to assist.

The minor was soon located and found to be in possession of a toy that looked like a handgun, police said.

No threats were made against anyone at the school.

Tumwater police said the school administration and the School Resource Officer are responsible for managing the situation.

“The safety of students and staff is a top priority for the police department and the Tumwater School District,” Tumwater police said.
