A 30-year-old man plead guilty to a charge of homicide after taking drugs with a 17-year-old who later died of an overdose, the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Isaiah Middleton was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to controlled substance homicide.

The Prosecutor’s Office said Tumwater police responded to an overdose call in a motel there on August 2, 2021. A man, later identified as Middleton, and a 17-year-old male were found unconscious.

Middleton regained consciousness after first responders administered Narcan, a narcotic overdose treatment. He and the minor were taken to the Providence St. Peter Hospital, where the teenager died a few days later.

The defendant confirmed that he purchased drugs earlier on the day of the incident and took some of them with the minor. The Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory found that the narcotics contained fentanyl.

Tara Tsehlana, public information officer for the Prosecutor’s Office, told The JOLT that Middleton and the minor were unrelated and met on the night of the incident.

Middleton was initially arrested for distribution to a minor and unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, but the charges against him were later upgraded to controlled substance homicide.

Under what cir***stances was a 30 year old male partying in a motel with a 17 year old? Where was this youth first encountered? Were the persons involved already known to the police? Newsworthy are the facts that we can use to (hopefully) prevent this (presumably) family-devastating situation from occurring with more frequency.
