County Sheriff’s Office: Thurston County fire that killed 5 an accident

Posted

The house fire on Sherman Valley Road that killed a family of five, including three children, was not set intentionally, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) said Tuesday.

A fire broke out in a home on the 8800 block of Sherman Valley Road SW last Saturday, claiming the lives of Steven and Destiny Cox, along with three of their four children. The eldest was not home during the fire.

ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) investigated the incident, deploying an accelerant detecting K9 and engineer support from a Maryland fire research laboratory, according to the TCSO.

“Over the last four days, the scene has been investigated thoroughly,” the TCSO said in a media release. “Investigators have determined the fire was not intentionally set, and is most likely accidental, but they are still working to determine the specific origin and cause.”

A GoFundMe campaign for the support of the victims’ relatives has gathered $60,000.

Extreme Auto Outfitters, a local business based in Tumwater, is also accepting donations for the Cox family through a Timberland Bank account. They can be reached at 5403 Capitol Boulevard SW or at 360-236-9967.

Relatives have scheduled a vigil for Sunday, January 29, at the Tumwater District Stadium. They are requesting no open flames.
