Thurston County has officially designated April 2024 as Volunteer Appreciation Month, highlighting the indispensable contributions made by volunteers across the community.

The proclamation, issued by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), recognizes the dedication and selflessness of individuals who generously donate their time and skills to various causes.

“April is an opportunity to salute the unparalleled services of volunteer contributions encompassing a broad range of needs across our community, including housing services, resource distribution, community response services, and more,” the proclamation read.

Assistant County Manager Robin Campbell expressed gratitude towards the countless volunteers who tirelessly work on projects to improve the county.

"We could not finish all the things we do without their help, and the county deeply appreciates all of the efforts that they bring to the county," Campbell said.

Commissioner Gary Edwards echoed Campbell's sentiments, acknowledging the over 200 individuals actively participating in Thurston County's numerous commissions and advisory boards.

“We would never come close to getting our responsibilities accomplished without your help,” said Edwards. “You are unsung heroes without even knowing it.”

Commissioner Carolina Mejia thanked volunteers for their commitment and expertise, emphasizing the value of their contributions to the County.

"Just know that we really value just how much you're putting into this and the recommendations that come in front of the board," Mejia stated. “Really, thank you for choosing this way to volunteer.”

Commissioner Tye Menser applauded the county's diverse array of committees and highlighted a new online application process for interested volunteers.

"We're really excited about that," Menser said. He also expressed his intent to meet with all committee members, citing his own rewarding experience serving on a county advisory committee before becoming commissioner.

“We could not do the work we do without your help,” he added.
