Construction of Kindred Park completed in Tumwater

Tumwater’s Public Works Committee advised city council on Thursday, December 7, that construction of Kindred Park was complete.

The park is located on Aster Street in The Preserve, a housing community north of 93rd Avenue.

Kindred Park features a 24-foot by 24-foot covered shelter, four picnic benches, a children’s play structure, a concrete embankment slide, a 100-foot zip line, and a half-court basketball court.

The city contracted Tapani Inc. of Battle Ground to construct the park for $579,794. The total cost of the construction exceeded the company’s bid by $4,487.

According to documents prepared for the meeting, the additional costs were due to the installation of rubber mats at the slides, removal of excavated dirt, and additional safety measures while the play equipment was not yet installed.

Senior Capital Projects Manager Don Carney told the committee that the park was designed in-house by the city but was initiated by a local consulting firm. The construction of the project was paid through park impact and general government fees.

The committee is also recommending to the city council to accept as complete the construction of pre-fabricated concrete restrooms in Barclift Park and Tumwater Hill Park.

Tumwater contracted KBH Construction Company of Olympia to construct the restrooms for $215,900. The final cost of construction was only $205,655.
