Buddhist Memorial for Transgender Day of Remembrance

Posted by jenniebethbanks

Each year, members and friends of the transgender community gather to mourn the previous year’s victims of violence by reciting their names out loud. Last year, Open Gate Zendo, a Chan Buddhist temple in Olympia, offered a traditional Buddhist memorial service in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Come and experience an abbreviated version of the full service in advance of the Day of Remembrance itself. Bring the names of any of the past year’s deceased in your own life. We will mourn them along with the transgender community’s dead.

All are welcome and encouraged to participate in this event, whether or not you consider yourself to be Buddhist. This service is offered to help all find freedom from suffering together – no exceptions.

With Shih Yincheng ~ Assistant Priest at the Open Gate Zendo.

Part of ON THE EDGE ~ Perspectives on Death, Dying, Loss & Living, a month-long exploration into death, dying, loss, and living. The events aim is to stimulate conversation around these topics as well as raise awareness of some of the local organizations and individuals working in the field.
