The application period is now open for the 2026-27 Washington State University (WSU) Thurston County Extension Master Gardener and Public Works Master Recycler Composter volunteer training programs.
Applications for the Master Gardener program will be accepted until Friday, Aug. 28 at 5 p.m., while the Master Recycler Composter program will accept applications until Monday, Aug. 17, at 8 a.m.
WSU Extension staff and regional experts will teach participants basic botany, soil science, plant identification, pest and disease diagnosis, how to grow food, as well as best gardening practices.
After completing training, participants will share their knowledge through horticultural-related community service in Thurston County.
The training course, complete with comprehensive virtual, classroom and field-based instruction, runs from Sept. 25, 2026, to May 14, 2027.
No textbook is required, but training involves reading, homework, quizzes, in-class activities, lectures and a final exam.
The training tuition is $291 and includes all course supplies, field experiences and a background check fee.

Regional experts will lead the interactive training, along with staff from the Thurston County Public Works Department and WSU Extension, who specialize in composting, recycling and waste reduction.
In-person classes will be held on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following dates: Sept. 18, Oct. 2, Oct. 16, Oct. 30, Nov. 13, Nov. 20, Dec. 4, Dec. 11, Jan. 8, Jan. 22, Feb. 5, Feb. 12, Feb. 26, March 12 and March 19.
A $25 training fee will be paid at the first class, which covers other unsubsidized training-related costs. Applicants must be 18 years old or above, and either live, work, or operate a business in Thurston County.
