Our women friends and I carry pepper spray when we go on the trail and won't walk through heavily forested areas during the week because there aren't enough other people around.
We have encountered unstable people coming out of the bushes, staring at us as we walk by and talking gibberish .
Very scary.
So far we haven't had to use the spray but hold it in our hand where it is easily seen by others.
