I worked at DNR for several years, both in Timber Sales and in the Policy Office. The purpose of DNR is to sell logs to raise funds for the state. Period. As a tree-hugger, I had a hard time understanding this at work, but learned that there was no other purpose for DNR's existence. They pay lip-service to environmentalists and then continue to cut as many trees as possible to meet their goals to give the legislature the funds required to meet the budgets. Those are the hard facts. The state bases most of our funding on those timber sales. Unless we change our income base to an income tax or another income source, those trees will continue to disappear. Do you want to pay more taxes? I wish it were otherwise. I much prefer trees.

From: Washington has few older forests left. Why does DNR keep logging them?
