The Ku Klux Klan has been a fixture in the Lewis County area for at least a century and a half. My Grandmother, now deceased, told me stories of her Uncle having Klan meetings in his barn on his farm. My Grandmother accidentally went into the barn during preparations for such a meeting. She was about ten years old, so about 1930. She saw things that scared her for the rest of her life. She would never give details, but from seeing the fear in her face, especially her eyes, I knew it had to be terrifying. She talked a little about what she saw, but not much. It was just too traumatizing for her. Luckily, she was not caught. I would never live in Lewis County, although most of my family is buried there.
