The Yelm Police Department is warning social media users about a surge in scam comments appearing on social media posts, including on its official Facebook page.
The department said the comments are being posted to deceive users into clicking unsafe links.
The scammers often pose as eyewitnesses to crimes or events that they have posted on their page and leave comments, such as “I couldn't believe my eyes” or “Caught the whole thing on video,” followed by a suspicious link. The comments are not genuine and are designed to steal personal information or compromise online accounts, the department said.
Scammers target posts that attract high engagement, knowing people are more likely to interact with them. Anyone who has clicked on a suspicious link is urged to take immediate steps to secure their account.
