The state invites locals to an online open house about the new State Route 510 Yelm Loop Phase 2 Project, a $58.6 million proposal to construct a two-lane highway.

Headed by the Washington State Department Transportation (WSDOT), the open house runs for an entire month from June 1 to July 1. The proposed project will cover three miles of road between SR 510 and SR 507.

Yelm is fourth largest city in Thurston County but some say it has the worst traffic jams. The project aims to alleviate the traffic congestion on Yelm Avenue, especially during peak hours. The project would not just improve the traffic in the city but also affect the regional transport system.

In addition, the proposed plan would also reduce accidents on the new highway. WSDOT explained that the construction would improve the emergency response time and help reduce traffic congestion during such incidents.

Aside from building a two-lane highway, the construction would also provide multimodal transport for pedestrians and bikers as the state plans to build a shared-use path on one side of the new highway.

Currently, the project is undergoing a federally required environmental assessment phase called the Supplemental Environmental Assessment (SEA) which will end by fall.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the online public meeting by sending their questions through an online form or phone at (360) 570-6699. They may also review the SEA documents.

Once approved, the city plans to begin the construction by 2023 and be completed by 2025.
