Through Olympia’s Firearm Destruction Program, Olympia Police Chief Rich Allen said the city assists people to dispose of weapons they no longer want.
Allen was at the Olympia City Council meeting on Tuesday, August. 9 to talk about the program, which he said had been around for years.
"We occasionally get a call from a gun owner, and they no longer want the firearm. They want us to take it and destroy it," Allen said, adding such a request seldom happens.
But recently, there was an uptick in such requests from people who bought firearms years ago. "They want to dispose of it safely. They didn't want to sell it and want to take it out of circulation," Allen said.
For such a request, Allen said people could call the front desk of the police department to set up an appointment with the OPD's Evidence Custodian.
He reminded individuals not to show up at the city hall or the police front desk with firearms without an appointment.
"When you get here, an officer will come to your car and retrieve the firearm. We will make sure that it gets destroyed," the police chief said.
He added that people are required to fill out a form. While the process includes an option to participate anonymously. , the police will check the serial numbers of firearms.
"If it is stolen, then we have an obligation to try and locate the owner and return it to them. If it was labeled as being in some crime, we must follow up. But again, it's no questions asked. You can remain anonymous." he said.
Allen stated that more information will be available when they re-launch the program in the coming months.
