A transient claiming to be a graffiti artist was arrested after allegedly tagging several objects in downtown Olympia on Sun., June 20.

Adan Rincon, 38, was dressed in all black, carrying a shoulder pack and pen just after noon on Sunday. Police say he marked up light poles, utility boxes and marking with his “*OH” tag along 11th Ave near Washington and Columbia.

When contacted by Olympia police, Rincon allegedly replied “Yeah, I tagged a few, I am an artist and that’s what I do. So just give me a citation and leave me alone.”

Rincon who said he was from Portland but listed himself as a transient for an address, was told by Olympia police that he would be arrested for graffiti. According to the police report, Rincon replied “You can’t arrest me for expressing myself, it’s only a ticket.”

Rincon was wearing black bib overalls at the time of his arrest and had several markers in the front pocket of them. OPD also searched his satchel pack, where there were several other marker pens and paint pens, along with a small jar of liquid ink.

During his arrest, Rincon said that graffiti was his job and that he would continue to create graffiti. OPD asked Rincon how he earned money from graffiti and Rincon said that it was his advertisement and signature.

Rincon was booked into the Olympia jail on suspicion of three counts of graffiti.
