No one was hurt in the fire that destroyed Tyee Dental clinic in Tumwater on Thursday, March 30, but the offices were significantly damaged.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 5:03 p.m., according to Tumwater Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Crimmins, who said “it took a bit to get the fire under control.” When reached at approximately 6:50 p.m., after the fire was fully extinguished, he told The JOLT that it was not clear whether the building was a total loss or not.

Tumwater fire was first on the scene, supported soon after by crews from Black Lake, Griffin, East Olympia and Olympia Fire Departments.

Dentist Joshua Merrell, who purchased the clinic in June 2019, told The JOLT that he’s arranged to return to work next week, sharing space at Dental Care of Lacey with Dr. Kevin Nielsen. That clinic is located at 5024 Lacey Boulevard SE.

Dr. Merrell added that he wants to “encourage our patients that we’ll reopen [in Tumwater] again soon. We’ll have a better and nicer office when we rebuild.”
