Tumwater seeks to subsidize installation of EV chargers on multifamily properties

Posted

The City of Tumwater is calling on multifamily property owners to apply for grant funding to support the installation of level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on their premises.

Property owners wishing to be considered for the grant are invited to submit their information using this form before midnight on Friday, July 31.

Level 2 chargers run on 208 to 240 volts to deliver 10 to 20 miles of driving distance for every hour of charging.  They are capable of fully charging an EV in four to 10 hours and a plug-in hybrid in one to two hours.

Level 1 chargers, which operate on standard 120-volt wall outlets, need 40 to 50 hours to fully charge an EV and five to six hours for a plug-in hybrid.

To qualify, applicants must own or operate a property with at least five housing units.

If selected, recipients will receive up to $12,500 per charging port. The grant will cover installation, as well as planning expenses related to design and engineering. Applicants are expected to assume the costs above the maximum grant amount.

Grants will be awarded on a first come, first served basis to eligible applicants. Priority will be given to people with properties with affordable housing.

Units qualify as affordable if they fit one of the following conditions: units where monthly rent is capped for affordability, properties tied to dedicated government housing subsidies, or units rented to tenants using housing vouchers. Units reserved specifically for households earning 80 percent or less of the area median income also qualify.

Awardees can expect installation to take place between late summer and winter of this year.

Stop using taxpayer dollars to fund this stuff. Let the owners pay for their own expenses related to EV chargers. Nobody is subsidizing yours and my transportation costs, why should we pay for theirs? The EV industry has been riding on the backs of taxpayers for decades now, contributing nothing to support the streets and highways.

@TheVirtualOne There are plenty of subsidies for vehicles powered by gas.

"A 2023 study from the Energy Information Administration found that tax benefits constituted 85% of all federal subsidies for fossil fuel interests from FY2016 to FY2022."
