School board honors Tumwater High dance team for three state championships

The Tumwater School District Board of Directors recognized the Tumwater High School T-Birds for winning three state championships in Dance, Hip-Hop and Pom at a competition in Yakima.

The dance team won their 36th, 37th and 38th first place titles —  the most state championship titles of any dance team in Washington — in March.

Members of the Tumwater School District Board of Directors formally recognized the team’s winning ways at a meeting on April 23.

“This team, led by eight seniors, has an amazing amount of heart. They are committed, hard-working, goal oriented and unified,” Superintendent Kevin Bogatin said.

The team defeated 39 other teams and placed first in Dance with a score of 270.7, first in Hip-Hop with a score of 269.7 and first in Pom with a score of 277.7.

According to the district, the team’s scores in Hip-Hop and Pom were the highest of the day in the 1A, 2A and 3A divisions.

The board also handed cupcakes to the winners during a recognition ceremony.
