Tumwater to construct new EV chargers as part of fleet electrification initiative

Posted

Plans to construct electric vehicle charging stations to support Tumwater’s fleet electrification efforts are moving forward.

Tumwater City Council authorized a contract with Sare Electric to construct and install ten chargers for $89,458 as part of the council’s consent agenda on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Five properties have been chosen as the chargers' locations: city hall, the police department, the fire stations on Israel Road and Linwood Avenue, and Old Town Center.

The chargers will not be intended for public use.

Sustainability Coordinator Alyssa Jones Wood said during the Oct. 3 Public Works Committee meeting that two level 2 chargers would be built per location, enough to cover the city’s electrification efforts for the next two years.

The project's funding comes mostly from a $78,000 grant from the Washington Department of Commerce. On the same day, the council also approved an agreement with the state agency for the grant.

The city intends to cover the remaining costs, which it will then reimburse via direct payment through the Internal Revenue Service.

A fleet electrification assessment by the city conducted in 2023 found that up to 69% of the city fleet could be electrified by 2030. If it pursues electrification, the city could also reduce its gasoline consumption by more than 70% by 2030.

Huge waste of money. Ten chargers will cost way more than the 89k.

Why are we spending money on this??? The automobile association is moving away from the mandated unconstitutional edict this administration put on private companies. There was no EV mandated legislation passed... Washington is a state that is going broke - raising taxes does not help, it only hurts. Spending money on crap like this is foolish. Shall I get Milton Friedman to explain this concept again? Heck, are there any John F. Kennedy democrats out there that are fiscally conservative? Com'on people - use some common sense!
