The Tumwater Fire Department reported no significant change in the number of calls received in 2024 compared to the previous year.
The department received 5,924 calls for service in 2024, according to an update by Fire Chief Brian Hurley to city council on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The chief noted that the overall figure is lower by less than 2% compared with 2023.
The update also includes figures for the type of calls they received. Of those calls, 75% were for emergency medical services, which Hurley noted is typical for fire response agencies.
Eleven percent were “good intent” calls, which Hurley said included calls that resulted in false alarms.
Only 5% of the calls were about fire-related incidents.
In terms of the number of calls per station, the headquarters at Israel Road received 34% of the calls while the fire station at Linwood Avenue received 42%.
The chief also recapped accomplishments for the previous year, which include:
Hurley also shared goals for the year, which primarily deal with the continued implementation of various programs.
Hurley particularly mentioned two programs related to nonemergency services and crisis response, as well as a community risk reduction program that involves educational outreach and fire inspections.
The fire chief also mentioned facility upgrades for both fire stations and providing cancer screening for their personnel, as part of the city’s contract with the firefighters union.

5% of 5,924=296
So less than one trip per day for fire related responses.
I wonder if we would save money on fire truck expenses if we only sent the fire trucks to the fire related responses and sent efficient low cost electric vehicles to the other 5,628 visits.
