The Thurston County Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed May 2025 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, recognizing their cultural contributions and diverse histories throughout the region.
Lin Crowley, representing the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition of South Puget Sound, accepted the proclamation during the board’s Tuesday, May 6, meeting and extended an invitation to the public for an upcoming community celebration.
“Washington has a very rich and diverse AANHPI (Asian American and Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander) population,” Crowley said “More than 20% of the state identifies as AANHPI, and these communities have played vital roles in shaping the history and culture of our state.”
Crowley emphasized the historical significance of early Chinese railroad workers, the forced internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, and the resilience of Southeast Asian communities resettled after the war in Southeast Asia.
She also highlighted the ongoing contributions of more recent immigrants, who have become integral to the local social fabric.
“This month is a time to honor our heritage but also to learn from one another,” Crowley said. “Many of them are now part of our communities, too, which added to our beautiful tapestry of our community.”
As part of the month’s observance, Crowley announced the AANHPI Heritage Month Celebration will be held on May 24 at Longhouse at The Evergreen State College.
The free event will feature cultural performances, food, educational workshops and information booths. All community members are invited to attend.
Commissioner Tye Menser praised the annual event, saying, “I’ve been to the last few and they’ve always been really fun and good.”
Crowley also encouraged county leaders and community members to attend the coalition’s monthly meetings, which are open to anyone interested in supporting or learning more about AANHPI communities.
The proclamation was one of several issued by the board during its May 6 meeting.
